I am a Canadian woman, a singer-songwriter. I am a graduate of Berklee College of Music where I studied Jazz Composition and Performance. I studied under some exceptional teachers* and met many extraordinary musicians who became dear friends and collaborators. For quite a long time, I thought I was going to be a contemporary jazz singer. That turned out to be untrue. While I love jazz and spent many years of my life studying and performing it, I began my musical life listening to the music of great songwriters** and writing songs of my own. I love artful lyrics and melodies. I have returned to that now. It is where my heart lies, but also where my strengths lie.
I have two recordings available to you.
The first is called The Boston EP. It was recorded in February of 2014, a little over a month after I graduated from Berklee, in a lovely old studio in a snowy forest near Acton, Massachusetts. The songs were all written during my time at school, and as a result you will hear quite a heavy jazz influence. This was my first attempt at recording a body of work. I didn’t really know what I was doing. I like many parts of this album, and there are many things I would do differently now. It serves as a time stamp. I think “It Hurts” is pretty strong.
The second recording is called Quiet Songs. This EP is perhaps more representative of who I am as a musician than The Boston EP is. It was made very differently. It was recorded in my friend’s home in Boston during the historic blizzards in the winter of 2015. I was craving a more live sound full of imperfections after my first studio-perfect, mistake-free EP. I felt that a lack of imperfection also created a lack of emotion. I might still think that, but I’m not sure. Quiet Songs was recorded live. It features my friend Alec Watson singing beautifully and playing piano thoughtfully, as well as my friend Ethan T. Parcell playing drums in a way no one else does. It was made quickly and cheaply. I like it, but I have evolved again.
Since the release of Quiet Songs in March of 2015, I have toured, I have travelled to Europe for artist residencies, I have made some paintings, I have taught music, and I have begun the painstaking process of writing a new album. You will hear these new songs soon if you choose to wait for them. I am taking my time. I am trying to create something very good. It is hard work! But I am excited.
